Communications processors for Advanced Controller S7-1500/300/400

More dynamic, faster, more cost-effective

To continue to be one decisive step ahead of the competition, you must solve your PLC tasks dynamically, fast, and cost-effectively.

Our communications processors relieve the controller’s CPU of communications tasks and facilitate additional connections. They permit integration into Industrial Ethernet and implement the connections on the automation level as well as to the IT world.

Communication processors for S7-1500

CM 1542-1 communication module for connection to PROFINET

The CM 1542-1 communication module expands the SIMATIC S7-1500 controller to include a PROFINET connection. A PROFINET connection, an integrated 2-port switch with 10/100 Mbps, is used for communication with lower-level PROFINET devices. By means of the module, a separate PROFINET segment can also be implemented that takes on control of multiple field devices in a separate network. The CM 1542-1 assumes all communication tasks, thus reducing the CPU workload. STEP 7 Professional (TIA Portal) as of V13 is required to configure the full functional scope of the CM-1542-1.

CP 1543-1 communication processor securely connects SIMATIC S7-1500 to Ethernet

The CP 1543-1 communication processor securely connects the SIMATIC S7-1500 controller to Ethernet networks. By combining a variety of security features such as an SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) firewall and data encryption protocols such as FTPS and SNMPv3, the new communication module protects individual S7-1500 stations or even entire automation cells against unauthorized access. This allows the PLC to communicate with higher-level control systems or industrial IT applications via a secure Ethernet connection.

The administrator can regulate access to the S7-1500 by means of detailed firewall rules in CP 1543-1. The new communication processor also enables data transmission using the FTP/FTPS protocol. Furthermore, the module supports the IPv6 protocol, open communication via TCP and UDP as well as S7 communication. TIA Portal is used for configuring all functions. The communication processor makes its diagnostic information available to the S7-1500 controller; the user can then view and analyze this information via the front display by means of the TIA Portal or the S7-1500 Web server.

The SIMATIC CP 1543-1 has an RJ45 connector for establishing connections to Industrial Ethernet networks. Data can be transmitted using the full or half-duplex process in bandwidths of 10, 100 and 1000 mbps. The communication processor also ensures consistent time synchronization in the NTP (Network Time Protocol) process within the connected S7 station. Among other things, this can help identify error messages or synchronization problems within the network.

Siemens adds PROFIBUS module to new SIMATIC S7-1500 controller

The SIMATIC CM 1542-5 communication module is expanding its SIMATIC S7-1500 controller to include a PROFIBUS connection. The module adds a 9-pin Sub-D socket connector to versions of the S7-1500 which have no integrated interface, allowing communication with lower-level PROFIBUS devices in bandwidths from 9.6 kbps to 12 mbps. The module can also be used to implement separate PROFIBUS lines, in other words, to control a number of different field devices via a number of PROFIBUS segments. The CM 1542-5 assumes all communication tasks in the process, thus reducing the load on the controller's CPU. Diagnostics information can be viewed on the front display of the connected SIMATIC S7-1500 via the TIA Portal or via the controller's Web server.

The new communication module can be used as a time master or time slave for synchronizing the time of day within the plant. When used as a time master, the module forwards the time specified by the controller to the connected peripheral devices via PROFIBUS. When used as a time slave, it receives time-of-day frames from the network and forwards them as the valid time for the S7-1500 station.

CM 1542-5 is suitable for S7 communication as well as for conventional PROFIBUS communication. This makes it possible to establish communication between the S7-1500 controller and other devices, for example those from the SIMATIC S7-300/400 range.

The new firmware V2.0 enables additional use cases through open user communication (SEND/RECEIVE) via FDL. On the basis of PROFIBUS layer 2 (FDL), the CM 1542-5 provides a single optimized interface for process or field communication. Integrated and high-performance communication between SIMATIC S5, SIMATIC S7 and PC is possible with the help of this interface.

In contrast to the CM 1542-5 (6GK7542-5DX00-0XE0), which supports 125 DP slaves, 32 DP slaves can be operated with the CP 1542-5.
