IMATIC S7-1200 supports communication via PROFINET – the open, manufacturer-independent standard (IEC 61158/61784). PROFINET is 100% Ethernet and stands for maximum transparency, open standard communication via TCP/IP, network security and simultaneous real-time communication. The integrated PROFINET interface in SIMATIC S7-1200 can be used for programming the CPU and for communication with SIMATIC HMI Basic Panels for visualization, but also for communication with other controllers or IO devices such as drives. The PROFINET cable is connected by means of a noise-immune RJ45 port with auto-crossover functionality supporting Ethernet connections and providing data transmission rates of up to 10/100 Mbit/s. For quick and error-free installation or changes on site, with FastConnect Siemens offer a sophisticated quick-assembly system consisting of cables, plug-in connectors and assembly tools. One of the advantages, thanks to PROFINET, is the integrated Web Server of the SIMATIC S7-1200. By means of the integrated Web server, information about the CPU as well as process data can be retrieved via a standard web browser. Data can also be archived from the user program during runtime. Furthermore, in firmware version 4.0, the CPUs possess the PROFINET iDevice functionality. The simplest way to configure multiple S7-1200 CPUs into a master-slave architecture: Each CPU process image is individually written and read. |
To minimize the cabling overhead and maximize the network flexibility, the CSM 1277 compact switch module can be used for configuring a homogenous or hybrid network – in linear, tree or star topologies. The CSM 1277 is a 4-port unmanaged switch which allows you to connect the SIMATIC S7-1200 with up to three additional devices.

Each SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU can be expanded with as many as three communication modules.
The RS485 and RS232 communication modules are suitable for serial, character-based point-to-point connections.
The library functions USS Drive Protocol and Modbus RTU Master and Slave Protocol are already included in the SIMATIC STEP 7 basic engineering system.
Using the RF120C communication module all SIMATIC identification systems (RF200/300/600 and optical reader system MV400) can be connected directly to the SIMATIC S7-1200. A reader can be connected to a RF120C via the point-to-point connection. The RF120C also provides a library with application blocks that are very easy to handle. Configuration is carried out via the TIA Portal.

The use of the SIMATIC S7-1200 as a master or slave on the proven PROFIBUS field bus facilitates standardized communication from the field level through to the control level. This meets one of the most important requirements in the performance range of compact automation.
For the connection of the S7-1200 to PROFIBUS there are two communication modules (CMs): The DP-Master CM 1243-5 enables as many as 16 field devices to be connected as slaves, e.g. ET 200 distributed I/O modules. Together with the CM 1242-5, the S7-1200 functions as a DP-Slave and can thus be connected to any DP-Master. Both modules are readily connected on the left of the CPU via the backplane bus.

Together with the GPRS communication processor, the S7-1200 CPU permits easy, wireless applications for controlling, monitoring and checking distributed stations using the general packet radio service (GPRS). This not only enables the remote control of machines via Teleserver Basic, but also the data recording. Apart from sending text message notifications for event-oriented fault diagnostics, the GPRS modules permit additional teleservice functions such as global remote diagnostics, configuration and programming.

AS-i is an open, manufacturer-independent bus system that organizes the transmission of digital and analog process and machine signals into the control system. The AS-i Master communication module, as the "heart" of the AS-i Fieldbus can record sensors in the field or control actuators in the field.
The connection of an AS-i network to the SIMATIC S7-1200 is quite simple: the AS-i Master CM 1243-2 communication module is simply plugged into the CPU and wired to the field. The AS-i Master CM 1243-2 thus connects the lowest field level, such as IO modules, position switches, signaling columns, load feeders and motor starters with the higher-level SIMATIC S7-1200 control system. For each master, up to 62 AS-Interface slaves can be connected. All the advantages of the TIA Portal apply, such as the fully graphical parameter assignment and diagnostics of all AS-i stations without additional software.

The telecontrol communication processors offer a range of different possibilities for the implementation of extremely versatile and cost-efficient Telecontrol remote stations (RTUs) based on SIMATIC
S7-1200.
TeleControl Basic is based on SIMATIC S7-1200 and secure transmission via mobile radio or the Internet. It is particularly suitable wherever small data quantities have to be transmitted over wireless connections or via the Internet. TeleControl Basic can be used as a low-cost fault signaling system, but thanks to the bidirectional communication facility, it is also suitable for simple telecontrol monitoring and control tasks.
Together with the GPRS communication processor, the S7-1200 CPU supports simple Telecontrol applications for monitoring and control of distributed stations using general packet radio service (GPRS). The GPRS CP 1242-7 enables SMS messaging for event driven fault diagnostics. Additional full Teleservice functionally can be realized for remote diagnostics, configuration & programming.
The CP 1243-1 communications processor is used for connecting a SIMATIC S7-1200 to the TeleControl Server Basic control center software via Ethernet and for safe communication via IP-based networks in combination with an industrial router e.g. SCALANCE M.

The communication processors CP 1243-1 DNP3 and CP 1243-1 IEC expand the TeleControl Professional portfolio with standardized remote control protocols. Both CP 1243-1 variants offer cycle and event-driven transmission of measured values and set values as well alarms between RTU and central control system without the need for costly programming. The connection to the control station over various public or private remote networks is performed via external modems/routers such as SCALANCE M, which are connected to the Ethernet interface of the CP.
