The central processing units (CPUs) are the heart of the SIMATIC S7-1500.
They execute the user program and network the controller with other automation components.
The scope of Controllers ranges from standard and failsafe CPUs for small to midsize requirements, offering compact size designs with integrated inputs and outputs, supplemented with technological functions, all the way up to most demanding high performance applications.
For applications in the field of midrange motion control, technology CPUs support with extended motion control features. Wherever an integration of high level language C/C++ as PLC function or as self-contained application is needed, multifunctional platform CPUs come into play.

The two controllers with a particularly compact design round off the SIMATIC S7-1500 portfolio. They combine CPU with front display and inputs/outputs in one enclosure and are recommended in particular when space-saving requirements apply, such as in series machine manufacturing.
Due to the space-saving design, the CPU 1511C with 32 digital I/O ports, 5 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs is only 85 millimeters wide, and the CPU 1512C with 64 digital I/O connections, 5 analog inputs and 2 analog outputs is only 110 millimeters wide.
If required, both models can be expanded by additional I/Os by means of signal modules. Important technology functions such as counting, measuring and positioning are already integrated in the hardware. Additional advantages include the low procurement costs as compared to modular controllers with modules and the resulting simplified stock keeping.
The new Advanced Controllers combine the compact size with high performance. Thus, the CPU 1511C-1 PN has a bit performance of 60 ns and the somewhat larger CPU 1512C-1 PN has a bit performance of 48 ns. Particularly when migrating from previous controller generations, users therefore benefit from the large functional scope of the powerful hardware.

The fail-safe SIMATIC S7-1500 CPUs are equipped with a large program and data memory for complex standard and fail-safe applications. They can be used as PROFINET I/O controller or as distributed intelligence (PROFINET I-device).
The process signals including safe signals can be recorded either centrally by signal modules or distributed via PROFINET.
The integrated PROFINET I/O interface is designed as a switch so that a line topology can be set up in the plant. The additionally integrated PROFINET I/O interface (as of CPU1516F-3) with separate IP address can be used for network separation, for example. Additional PROFINET/PROFIBUS interfaces can be added using communications modules. These also support PROFIsafe and thus allow the connection of even more fail-safe devices.
The SIMATIC S7-1500 fail-safe controllers are certified according to EN 61508 (2010 version) for functional safety and are suitable for use in safety-related applications up to SIL 3 according to
IEC 62061 and PL e according to ISO 13849. Additional password protection for F-configuration
and F-program is set up for IT security.

The engineering of SIMATIC and SINAMICS gets done in the Totally Integrated Automation Portal
